I don't think many of us need an excuse to eat more pasta, but here's one just for good measure...tomatoes!
You've heard the saying "you are what you eat" right? Well, you definitely want to eat tomatoes because these humble little fruits will fill you up with lots of good stuff, and make you look great from the inside out! Not only are tomatoes loaded with antioxidants (vitamins a, c, and e) but they also contain vitamin k, 9 different minerals, 5 B vitamins, protein, fiber and lycopene. So what does all this mean really?
Well, first of all let me explain what an antioxidant is. We hear the word thrown around all over cosmetics ads and you cant walk down most beauty aisles or displays without seeing the word, but what do they really do? Antioxidants are substances that inhibit oxidation (duh). They remove oxidizing agents (a.k.a.- free radicals) from the body.
So think of your skin as a piece of tin or sheet metal (glamorous, right?!). Well at first it's all shiny and smooth and full of possibilities (just like your skin), but then it gets exposed to the elements (free radicals) and it gets rained on a couple of times, and hangs out in the sun for days at a time with no protection. Then you start to see little rust spots starting to develop and it might crack in a few spots. Pretty soon your bright shiny sheet metal begins to look like it's seen better days... if only someone would have been there to suggest eating a few tomatoes!
Lycopene is one of the most potent known antioxidants and is what gives the tomato it's red color. It can also increase your sun protection by 30% according to a BBC study where participants were given 16mg of lycopene (in the form of tomato paste) a day. So now you know what tomatoes do inside your body what can it do to the outside?
Topically, tomatoes can be used on all skin types but they're especially great for those suffering with acne or those of us with oilier skin types. There are so many great products out there that utilize the tomato as an active ingredient, like:
ilike organics tomato suntan gel
eminence organics skin care garlic & tomato masque - which sounds like something delicious!
(please don't eat it haha)
Bloody Mary Energizing Mask from HMOrganic
and Skin Apotheke's Fabulous Face Cleanser w/ Apple Rose, & Tomato
I hope this was informative and encourages you to eat your tomatoes! We really should eat more fruits & veggies every day, but that a story for another day! ;]
